MOSES will be participating in a Statewide campaign to restore voting rights to the people who are on some form of Supervision. Please come out and show support for this Bill and our statewide campaign at the unveiling of the “Unlock the Vote” legislation by Senate Sponsor, Senator Lena Taylor and Assembly Sponsor, Jodi Emerson. Unlock the Vote is a transformative bill that could add 66,000 eligible new voters to the rolls in Wisconsin by restoring voting rights to people as they reenter their communities from prison. Expo has led the call to restore voting rights to formerly incarcerated people and believes introducing this law in the state legislatures makes it clear that the fight continues against voter suppression in this state. Wisconsin would join many states looking to expand access to the polls and make a more inclusive democracy becoming the 18th
State with DC to restore voting rights to reentering citizens.
“Laws that aim to disenfranchise people based on criminal records are a Jim Crow era relic that have no place in our democracy,” said Jerome Dillard, State Director for EXPO. ““Voting is a fundamental right of citizenship. Under our constitution, there is no legitimate justification for denying people who have paid their dues from having a voice in our democracy.”
Unlock the Vote would rightfully restore to reentering citizens the most basic of civic participation, the right to vote. The press conference will begin at 2 p.m. in the Wisconsin State Capitol, 2 E Main St, Madison, WI 53703 where Senator Taylor and Representative Emerson will present “Unlock the Vote” and its accompanying legislation, the press conference will conclude after hearing from several more speakers.
